Artist Statement
I love spending my time immersed in a world of color explorations.
Painting brings me joy, and is the perfect process to experiment with color interactions. It is amazing to observe how a color can appear different based on the neighboring colors. Altering tint, tone and shade means the interactions are limitless. I feel driven to experience them all.
I use acryla gouache as its buttery consistency is wonderful for color mixing, and it flows nicely off the brush. The velvety matte finish once dry creates opaque color areas of unvaried color.
Placing these color areas next to one another is called hard-edge painting, a style I love for its clean and organized look. Many hard-edge artists further this effect by using tape for crisp separations of color areas. I differ in that I enjoy the challenge of not using tape and painting free hand, opting for the slight imperfection of a human touch.
My paintings often begin with a sketch of shapes or patterns inspired by weavings, quilts, mosaics, or stained glass.
My color choices are thoughtfully selected before I begin a painting, and I take mixing notes as I work. I am also fascinated by the indirect power of color as a language. It influences moods, stirs memories, triggers longings, and can spark our personal stories.
